Baylor College of Medicine is an independent health sciences university in the Texas Medical Center in Houston. Its commercialization path runs through biomedical discovery, with faculty research that already ranks among the nation’s most competitive NIH portfolios.
Baylor faculty competed for more than $319 million in National Institutes of Health funding in 2024. The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research ranked the College 20th among U.S. medical schools and first in Texas, a state lead it has held since the first year of Blue Ridge data in 2001. In the U.S. News & World Report 2025 rankings, Baylor received Tier 1 status, one of 16 medical schools nationally and one of two in Texas.
Commercialization runs through the BCM Innovation Institute, which replaced BCM Ventures. The institute assesses and protects intellectual property, helps with invention disclosure, and works with faculty on the commercial path while they keep publishing, writing grants, and running research programs. It also manages the portfolio of BCM-related companies and mature technologies and markets them to venture investors, pharmaceutical companies, and other partners.
